Tracy Williams, a native of Oceana, West Virginia, moved to Ashland in 1992 after graduating from nursing school. She began her career at the former King’s Daughters Medical Center (KDMC) and eventually became a nurse practitioner. A little later in life, she pursued even more specialized training, becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) at the age of 40.
During her time in anesthesia school Williams met Angie Patton and Anne Riffle, who would become lifelong friends. She then met Shirley Lambert, another CRNA, through work. In the early stages of friendship these ladies had no idea they would later become more than close friends; they would become travel companions who were more like travel sisters!
In 2018, Williams’ life took a major turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 47. It was during her treatment that she took her first major trip––a Viking River Cruise with her mother, Linda Lester, who also had breast cancer in 2017. During their cruise, this mother-daughter duo visited Budapest, traveled the Danube River, and explored Prague and the Czech Republic.
“This was probably my favorite trip, and the one that inspired me to keep taking more,” Williams said.
In October 2019, Williams and a group of travel sisters set sail for Italy. The group started in Venice where they toured the famous canals and rode gondolas. Then, they ventured to Tuscany for wine tasting and visits to vineyards and olive groves.
“I was amazed how every family in Tuscany seemed to have their own vineyard,” she said.
The group also explored the Leaning Tower of Pisa and ended the trip in Rome where they visited St. Peter’s Basilica and saw the relics of the Apostle Peter.
In January 2023, Williams and her husband Shane took a trip to Portugal–leaving the travel sisters behind on this occasion. They visited Lisbon, Porto, and the Douro Valley where Tracy fell in love with the picturesque vineyards nestled in the mountains. One of the highlights of this trip was trying different port wines and exploring the small fishing town of Nazare––famous for its massive surfing waves.
“We also tried different foods, booked private tours through Viator.com, and went to Fatima,” she said.
In March 2023, the travel sisters were off again, but this time to Amsterdam, Bruges, Paris, and London. Their numbers had grown in size, adding a couple more ladies to the group. They utilized a tour group which can be a great option for those who want to simplify their travels. Williams said that while some tours can be expensive, she prefers smaller group tours with about 10-12 people because they provide a more intimate experience.
Then, in November 2023, Williams and her travel sisters embarked on a 12-day adventure to Switzerland. They visited the Swiss Alps and experienced the breathtaking views from the highest point in Europe, accessible via a scenic train ride.
They also explored Lake Como, famous for its royal connections, and visited vineyards and lakes in the region. Williams fondly recalls the stunning landscapes, the delicious local food, and the joy of riding trains through the mountains.
When it comes to planning trips, Williams suggests starting with a reputable travel company like Gate 1 Travel or CIE Tours. These companies offer affordable options and handle everything from flights to hotel bookings and tours. Williams emphasizes the importance of research, recommending travel books and websites to get a feel for the cities and destinations before you go.
Looking ahead, Willams and her husband will be visiting Madrid, Spain, in January 2025, and she plans to return to Budapest with her travel sisters in April 2025. Despite her busy schedule, Williams remains passionate about traveling the globe and is determined to continue exploring the world.
Whether it’s with friends, family, or her husband, Tracy has embraced the joy of travel and encourages others to do the same.
