Meet the Board: Christopher Schuh

Gary Wollenhaupt

Head of the Department of Materials Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

As head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, Dr. Schuh’s research focuses on finding ways to make better materials.

His work on the optimization of mechanical properties in metals has led to the formation of numerous metallurgical companies, including Xtalic Corporation, which produces coatings on more than 10 billion components used in both enterprise and mobile electronics. Dr. Schuh is also involved in Desktop Metal, which provides a lower-cost option for metal additive manufacturing via its proprietary 3-D metal printers.

The Braidy Industries aluminum plant will incorporate new scientific nano-crystalline technical advances that will improve molten metal-based manufacturing.

The goal is to produce ultra-high strength and lightweight aluminum alloy materials for the production of automobile, aircraft and spacecraft internal spare parts and military products.

“By combining an advanced production capability with advanced metallurgical science, there is a great opportunity to reinvigorate metals manufacturing in the United States,” Dr. Schuh said.
