For area native Belinda Hunt, opening Float 606 located at 3401Winchester Avenue, seemed like a no-brainer. After first hearing about float therapy, she and her daughter went to a nearby float location to give it a try. Her first experience occurred sometime around March of 2021, and she remembers being highly anxious at first.
“When I first stepped into the float pod, my heart was beating at a rapid rate of speed, but by the end of my first session, I was taking deep breaths and had fallen asleep,” Hunt said.
Hunt says she found herself wanting to go back and do it again for the relaxation benefits. So, for the next six months, she floated on a regular basis. It was during this time that she began thinking of opening her own float location in Ashland.
“I contacted members of my family about the idea, and they were all for opening a float location with me. We wanted to bring something new to the area. Something where people could pause, rest and restore.”
Hunt began looking at equipment and had it shipped to the area eight months before their official opening in April of 2022. Float 606 has one float pod, two open float rooms, and a full spectrum infrared sauna. For those unfamiliar with float therapy, each float pod contains eleven inches of water and well over 1,000 pounds of medical grade Epsom salt.
“The pods are kept at 1.265 gravity, which is approximately what the Dead Sea is like,” Hunt explained. “There is a filter attached to each pod that keeps the water completely sanitized. The pumps run on the pods 24/7 unless someone is floating, and the pods are checked daily to ensure they are the correct temperature.”
In addition, the pods are dosed with 35% hydrogen peroxide––not like the 3% we keep in our homes. Hunt says the pods are cleaned thoroughly before every single float, and the pump runs for an hour-and-a-half between every float.
“The float tanks are cleaner than any pool or hot tub you’ll be in,” she said. “Another important fact to mention is that you cannot sink in the pod. Inside the pod, you’re safe to sleep, and the water is maintained at skin temperature. Our bodies regulate when we lay still so in a sense, we become one with the solution.”
Studies show there are many benefits of floating in a saltwater pod. Some include alleviation of anxiety, depression, chronic pain, PTSD, brain fog, lack of focus, insomnia, and more. Studies also show there are many benefits of spending time in a full spectrum sauna. These include detoxification, relaxation, weight loss, pain relief, anti-aging, lower cortisol levels, improved sleep, improved immunity, muscle recovery, and more.
Regardless of which therapy you try, Hunt says it’s important to do it more than once. “Try to make it a practice. It takes a couple times to get your body aligned. Each time your mind calms quicker and the experience is better than the one before.”
